POLOKWANE – The opening of the upmarket Sun Meropa Hotel in August 2017 came less than a year after Sun International and the Domba Empowerment Corporation (Pty) Ltd. announced the expansion plans for the complex. Construction workers and equipment were on the site between September 2016 and July 2017 to complete the project ahead of schedule.
“Turning one is a proud milestone for Meropa Hotel. Not only does it mark our first successful year of business, it also marks the start of a new phase as we move forward as an established citizen of the community,” says Meropa Casino General Manager, Peter Guthrie.
“From the outset, we have known our success and sustainability depends on our ability to constantly deliver premium and value-adding services, quality facilities, and a food and beverage offering that acknowledges contemporary dining trends.”

He explained that at the same time, they must help build and maintain a sustainable community, contribute to the local economy and promote a healthy environment.
“We take these obligations to heart. Customers are the lifeblood of our business. Product and services innovation will receive increasing emphasis going forward to ensure we remain relevant to our customers and to ensure we can continue to contribute to the local economy as an active member of the tourism community.”
Sun International’s R76 million investment in the hotel at Meropa Casino formed part of the company’s commitment to Polokwane and the Limpopo Gambling Board. The hotel development provides economic stimulus for the region through job creation and tourism to the area.
With the largest contemporary casino floor in Polokwane, a selection of dining and entertainment options and the beautiful hotel, Meropa is emerging as the premier leisure, business and conferencing destination in the region.
The new Meropa Hotel flows seamlessly into the casino complex and reflects the discerning Moroccan-styled architecture and aesthetics that make the complex distinctly Sun Meropa. The hotel boasts 60 immaculate rooms with a Moroccan theme, including four suites and two luxury suites. Catering to business and leisure travellers, the hotel features all amenities and the high quality of service that Sun International’s guests are accustomed to.
The Meropa complex, which celebrated its 16th anniversary in March this year, is a vibrant entertainment hub at the heart of Polokwane, offering an array of entertainment and experiences for young and old.
The complex features the upmarket Harvest Grill & Wine restaurant, the contemporary Jembe Tavern which hosts regular live entertainment, and a well-equipped and versatile conference centre. Meropa hosts a variety of events annually, which include well-known South African artists.
