POLOKWANE – Khutjo Donald Shai, was handed two life imprisonment terms plus an extra 10 years by the Polokwane High Court this week, said the police.
He was convicted for crimes committed between 2013 and 2015 which included rape, house breaking with intent to rape, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
During the commission of these crimes the accused was out on parole for robbery, said Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.
These heavy jail terms emanates from the following three separate incidents:
– 13 January 2013: the accused broke into a house at ga-Kgwete village in the Mecklenburg policing area outside Burgersfort, threatened an 18-year old woman and her sibling and afterwards forced the victim to an abandoned house where he raped her several times.
– 23 December 2013: in the same area, he forced a 47-year-old victim to bushes outside the village where he repeatedly raped and assaulted her. He also robbed her of money and a cellphone during the incident.
– 3 April 2015: Shai lured an 18-year old woman to a house at ga-Mashishi village where he repeatedly raped her.The ordeal lasted until the following day.
Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Jim Ledwaba, applauded the sterling work by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit and said that this sentence will go a long way in ensuring perpetrators of these kind offenses face the full might of the law.
