MOKOPANE – After seeing the modern design it is easy to believe why it costed the Municipality R21 million which they budgeted for.
In 2014 a tender was issued to Prism Architects to design the building and issue all the documents needed for the project. After that a tender was issued to Vharanani Properties on 14 April 2015 who officially started the building process in May 2015 after the municipality handed over the site to them.
Recently the building was ready for occupation by the municipal workers who then slowly started moving in. The three floored building, 2 300 square meters, is finely designed with a lot of thought and effort. It consists of 54 offices, three boardrooms, kitchens, toilets, lifts and even court yards.
On the ground floor is a service station for clients and on the first floor is the technical department offices. The Municipal Manager and his staff are situated on the second floor. Every floor has it’s own design and colour which is green (ground floor), red (first floor) and blue (second floor).
Louis Pieterse, Division Head of Buildings in the Technical Department was the project manager. He explains that the building was necessary for the municipality because there was not enough room for the workers or clients. “This new building was designed a bit more modern than the old building. I decided that we need something new and fresh. It is designed to be more echo-friendly with things like lights that switches off automatically after 30 minutes. There is also no light switches in the building, whenever a light detects you it switches back on automatically. The window glass are designed to keep heat out of offices to spare the air conditioning’s power usage which is energy sufficient. We designed the building in more of a square shape other than a ‘L’ shape building with a long hallway. Through this we receive a lot more natural light inside and less walking distance.”
Pieterse says that he believes the project was a positive accession to the municipality. “The project consists of three stages. The first stage is already done which was the work completion, now we are still in the technical stage where most of our workers already moved into the building but whenever there is any technical difficulties like lights. not working it can still be fixed. After that we will be waiting for 90 days to declare the project as completed. In some of the offices, boardrooms and waiting areas like at the service station, we are still waiting for more furniture. That will only come with time.”
