High lying areas still without water in Mokopane

MOKOPANE – Water supply in affected areas in Mokopane was interrupted at 06:00 Tuesday morning for maintenance by Lepelle Northern Water at the Doorndraai Water Treatment Works. Messages conveyed to residents stated the water supply would be restored the following day but some areas, however, remain without adequate water supply. This left residents fuming over not being able to enjoy one of their basic rights.

Korny Dekker, DA ward councillor, said: “Most of the upper side of Kameeldoringpark’s residents only have water during the night and nothing during the day. Residents must understand that the problem lays with the reservoir which does not get enough time to run full as it stood empty for two days. That is what makes it easier for the pressure to release water to the people living in the low lying areas as it is downhill”.

He explained residents in Kameeldoringpark have been struggling with water supply issues for longer than a month, excluding the current two-day interruption to the water supply.

On social media like the Kameeldoring WhatsApp group, residents voiced their complaints about not having water for five days.

Dekker added he has a petition relating to the water supply issues which residents can sign. The petition will be handed to the Mogalakwena Municipality during an emergency meeting with the municipal management and officials of the technical team.

Malesela Selokela, Media Liaison Officer at the Mogalakwena Municipality, said: “The reservoirs and even the water pipes are struggling to keep up with the water supply demand as residents consume more water during the day than at night. This is why the water supply has not yet evened out”.
