Van Zyl murder: Seven arrested suspects due in court for bail application

LIMPOPO – The suspects who were arrested in connection with the murders on Piet and Tilla van Zyl appeared briefly in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday were they were remanded in custody.

Mhlabane Bheki (30) from Jerusalem, Mbuyane Mpho Panuel (33) from Masoyi, Nkosi Dumisani (33) from Masoyi, Shabane Ntando (29) Masoyi, Phiri Nhlanhla Willis (37) from Masoyi and Mlazi Sfiso (36) were arrested last week in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng.

“Bhokodisa Vision Mbongwe (42) a former employee of Van Zyl was arrested on Monday,” said Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, Police Spokesperson.

Ngoepe confirmed that all seven suspects will reappear Friday 15 September for a formal bail application. Police investigations continue.

Marcelle Maritz, Limpopo Leader for Freedom Front plus, told Bosveld she was approached by the agriculture sectors to arrange a peaceful picket outside the court on Friday.  “The community need to stand together against the bail application.  I ask every farmer, resident of Mokopane and surrounding areas who are against farm attacks and murders to support this peaceful gathering.  There will be no posters with slogans, no fire arms, shouting or incitement allowed. 

The supporters leave Friday from Obaro, Mokopane at 7:30.”

Tuesday, September 12

LIMPOPO -Seven suspects arrested and linked to the Van Zyl murder have appeared briefly before the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court last week and were remanded in custody.

The suspects were arrested last week in Limpopo, Gauteng and Mpumalanga during a Tactical Joint Task Team Operation composed of the provincial tracking team, detectives and crime intelligence unit.

Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, Police Spokesperson said: “During this arrest, one firearm, magazine and ammunition were recovered. The origin of this firearm is still being determined through the ongoing investigation.”

The seven suspects were identified as Mhlabane Bheki (30), Mbuyane Mpho Panuel (33), Nkosi Dumisani (33), Shabane Ntando (29), Mlazi Sfiso (36), Phiri Nhlanhla Willis (37) and Bhokodisa Vision (42) who is a former employee of the Van Zyl’s, he confirmed.

According to previous reports, six suspects were arrested in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, the seventh in Mookgophong and the eighth in Lenasia, however, Ngoepe says he cannot confirm whether the eight suspect has been charged as yet.

The Van Zyl’s were attacked and killed on 19 August 2107 in their residence at Immerpan Farm near Zebediela and their bodies were discovered the following morning by a family member at around 09:00.

According to Ngoepe 2x hunting rifles, 1x hand gun and revolver were taken during the robbery.

The suspects will reappear before the court on until Wednesday, 13 September 2017 for a formal bail application.

Police investigations continue.
