POLOKWANE – Once you change your mindset about how people see trash you will be surprised at how many creative and beautiful things you can make from something others discarded.
A shining example of this is Tanya Koch, who saw the potential in bottle caps, something many people discard as trash.
She utilises bottle caps to create a variety of what can only be described as artworks, ranging from jewellery to pieces of framed art.
“There are so many different kinds of bottle caps ranging from cold drink caps to milk bottle caps. They are often thrown away without people realising the potential they hold for generating an income, whether you create something from them or simply recycle them for money,” Tanya tells BONUS.
As a means of sourcing the material she needs for her creation, Tanya who lives in Ladanna, has a special arrangement with local taverns and pubs to collect bottle caps from them once a week. The items she creates she in turn sells at local art markets to supplement her income.
“For me it is more like a hobby than a job but it is a means for people who struggle to find employment to earn an income if they are willing to think outside the box and embrace their creativity,” she explains.
