National Matric Rate Climbs to 76.2%, Limpopo declines by 3.5%

Minister for Basic Education, Angie Motshekga announced NSC 2016 results with the Class of 2016 obtaining a 72.5% pass rate, up from 70.7% in 2015.

POLOKWANE – Minister for Basic Education, Angie Motshekga announced the Matric Pass Rate for 2016 is 76.2% but says there is still a lot of work to be done.

Speaking live from Midrand in Gauteng, Motshekga said the Class of 2016 had recorded the highest number of National Senior Certificate candidates in the history of the education system with over 800 000 learners registered. “We must bear in mind that the Grade 12 examinations are not primarily designed to measure whether there is progress in the system as a whole or even in individual schools but the main purpose is to provide learners with an exit qualification,” she explained.

Motshekga went on to say that the department are increasingly prioritising interventions and policies that target an improved quality of learning and teaching and implementing accountability systems to ensure that quality outcomes are achieved, mainly prioritising early grade literacy.
Limpopo achieved a 62.5% pass rate, declining by 3.5% from 2015, leaving the province second last overall. Despite this, Limpopo was represented by 13 out of the 21 top learners in the country, dominating the top achievers in the country’s quintiles. The top performing district in the province is Vhembe, in spite of a leaked paper in the area, with a 70,3% pass rate.

The number of distinctions achieved during the 2016 NSC exams is 158 160 with more girls obtaining distinctions and bachelor passes.

“The NSC examination results are one of the most important barometers to evaluate progress made by government but despite notable achievements in the system, we still have a long way to go,” said Motshekga.

Results will be available for matrics from tomorrow morning.
