POLOKWANE – Almost everyone has taken a selfie at least once in their lives.

For others, it seems to be an everyday necessity to get through the day. With apps such as Instagram and Snapchat, the selfie has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Today is National No Selfie day and it was created to help higlight just how much the selfie has become part of our culture. Research suggests that the average girl spends 1 hour and 24 minutes each week trying to capture that perfect selfie.

While it doesn’t bother some, many people find the selfie narcissistic and suggests that it is a toll to build on what society perceives as being beautiful.

A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a digital camera or camera phone held in the hand or supported by a selfie stick.

Here are some fun facts about selfies:

  • In 2012, Time magazine considered selfie one of the “top 10 buzzwords” of that year; although selfies had existed long before, it was in 2012 that the term “really hit the big time”
  • A poll commissioned by smartphone and camera maker Samsung found that selfies make up 30% of the photos taken by people aged 18–24.
  • In 2013, the word “selfie” was included in the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary.
  • In November 2013, the word “selfie” was announced as being the “word of the year” by the Oxford English Dictionary, which gave the word itself an Australian origin.
  • Instagram has over 53 million photos tagged with the hashtag #selfie.
  • The word “selfie” was mentioned in Facebook status updates over 368,000 times during a one-week period in October 2013.
  • During the same period on Twitter, the hashtag #selfie was used in more than 150,000 tweets.
